Preferred ROMs for tuning

Some time ago Merlin suggested to me that it would be useful to have a set of preferred ROMs for tuning purposes, preferably based on ROMs known to be free of undesirable traits.

This thread has been created as a vehicle for info about such ROMs.

J series

J series ECUs, with appropriate tweaks (Immobiliser, baro CEL etc), can be retrofitted to both manual and automatic F & H series cars. They can also be retrofitted to E series cars as long as there's no automatic transmission in use (i.e. manual conversions with automatic ECUs should be fine).

Automatic ROMs:
The ROMs in the ZIP archive all have the engine section from the 87200005a ROM (from the 5sp Tiptronic Sports/VR-X/Verada), with which Merlin's tuning experiences had been pretty successful.

The 6G72 variants have the TCU section and various engine maps from a 3l J series automatic ROM. Note that the J series 3l cars used the same MAF as the 3.5l cars (i.e. a "338" MAF), which has different performance to MAFs used with earlier 3l cars (E & F series in particular). The tiptronic function has been tested satisfactorily in a TF Sports. I'm not aware of any 3l cars of any series being fitted with TCL so only non-TCL variants are included.

The 6G74 variants all have the standard Sports/VR-X engine maps (not the Ralliart engine maps). The 4 speed ROMs have the TCU section from a tiptronic non-TCL Sports ROM and the 5 speed variants have the TCU from the Ralliart auto ROM. The non-TCL 5 speed tiptronic ROM works in J series AWDs.

The ROMs preconfigured for use in E & F series cars have the following changes from the regular versions:
- EGR & purge control disabled
- Barometric pressure sensor CEL neutralised
- Immobiliser deactivated

L/W series

It appears that all the production automatic ROM have several problems from a tuning perspective:
- an effective load limit of 95-97 (with the standard MAF scaling) that there's no known workaround for yet
- after some seconds at WOT, the fueling goes super-rich (~10:1 AFR).

Whether the one manual ROM known has the same issues is not yet known.

No ROMs are therefore attached.

F/H series

Post reserved for H8 ROMs that are known to work well.
